Much of the distinctive imagery in Sophie MacCarthy’s ceramics is drawn from the natural world.
Scatter and flow, rhythm and movement are constant themes along with a bold and joyous feeling for colour. All her work is thrown and turned except for the oval dishes which are press-molded. Her designs are created using coloured slips along with wax resist and stencils or paper cut-outs. Some of her more intricate designs are built up slowly over many hours.
